Background Information
The course prepares students for the Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks v2.0 exam (BCMSN 642-811), a required exam for the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) industry certification.
Industry Involvement
An agreement between the University of Technology, Sydney and CISCO Systems has been formalised for the delivery of CCNA, CCNP and Sponsored Curriculum courses. The agreement provides certification of UTS lecturers for the presentation of the Cisco authorised material used in its courses. This means that lecturers at UTS meet Cisco's standards in these areas. UTS is a regional Cisco Academy. This course is one of a set of four (4) advanced modules which aim to provide students with hands-on experience with advanced networking equipment. The CCNP curriculum trains students to install, configure and operate local and wide area networks ( LANs and WANs), and dial access services for organisations with networks from 100 to more than 500 nodes with protocols and technologies such as: TCP/IP; OSPF; EIGRP; BGP; ISDN; Frame Relay; Spanning Tree Protocol (STP); and Virtual Trunking Protocol (VTP).
Students who wish to enrol in any one of the 4 CCNP Preparation courses should have successfully completed all the CCNA courses and should be the holders of a valid CCNA. Certificate. These skills can be gained by passing the CCNA Stages 1 through 4 which are also offered by this university. The CCNP Stage Three (Switched Networks) course prepares students for the CISCO Certified Network Professional certification examination (BCMSN 642-811). On completion of this CCNP Stage 3 course, participants may take the Switch 640-604 through a registered testing site such as Prometric or Vue. Information about Cisco CCNP certification can be found here.
Who Should Attend
The target audience for this course includes:
- Network administrators and technicians who are responsible for implementing or troubleshooting a multilayer switched network in an enterprise environment.
- CCNP and CCDP candidates
- CCIE routing/switching candidates
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to meet the following overall objectives:
- Given a campus design that includes multilayer switching over Fast Ethernet, deploy the required Cisco products and services that enable connectivity and traffic transport.
- Implement the necessary services at each layer of the network to all users to obtain membership in multicast groups in a working multilayer switched network.
- Given a working multilayer switched network, control network traffic by implementing the necessary admission policy at each layer of the network topology.
- When presented with an incorrectly working multilayer switched network, restore proper network operations through the use of Cisco devices and external management tools.
Prerequisites
A valid CCNA certification is required to sit for the Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks v2.0 Exam (642-811). These skills can be gained by passing the CCNA Stages 1 through 4 which are also offered by this university.
Course Outline
In the Stage 3 Switched Networks Course, network administrators learn how to build campus networks using multilayer switching technologies over high speed Ethernet. This course includes both routing and switching concepts, covering both Layer 2 and Layer 3 technologies. Stage 3 Switched Networks is part of the recommended training path for those students seeking the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP), and Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certifications.
Topics Covered
- Overview of a Campus Network
- Building a Campus Network
- Defining Common Workgroups
- Managing Redundant Links
- InterVLAN Routing
- Managing Network Traffic
- Configuring HSRP for a Fault-Tolerant Routing
- Multicast Overview
- Configuring IP Multicast
- Controlling Access to the Campus Network
Assessment
There are two exit paths from this course. Participants may elect to attend the course and not sit for the formal assessment in which case they will obtain a Certificate of Attendance. If participants elect to try for a Certificate of Attainment, they will be required to pass the following assessment items.
- To test knowledge awareness and recognition for the CCNP Stage 3 material
- Final on-line multiple choice exam (weighting 20%) Students should aim to score over 80% in the final on-line test to have confidence of their knowledge mastery.
- A Case Study Presentation (weighting 30%)
- Practical skills and troubleshooting assessment (weighting 50%) Individual skills test: to test practical skill and application of knowledge. This is done under time pressure.
Text
No set text but there are many books dealing with Cisco materials including those published by Cisco Press.
