BIT Interview Process

We are Looking for ...

Students who are:

  • Excellent communicators with good interpersonal skills
  • Motivated with the capacity to progress to a senior level of management
  • All-round achievers who can demonstrate initiative by their involvement in activities like peer support, school council, debating, mooting, music, YAA, community work or sport
  • Interested in IT. You don't need to have done an IT subject at the HSC though

We are interested in the whole you - not just a UAI. You'll be selected on a combination of interview performance and UAI. Each year we take in applicants whose eventual UAIs fall in the range 85-100, so don't be too scared to apply - you have to be in it to win it!

Hear from the Students...

Laura Jones - 3rd Year BIT Student

When I first heard about the BIT course at UTS, I was hesitant to apply. I was unsure whether I was what UTS and the Co-op sponsors of the course were looking for and even whether I was good enough to gain a place in this highly regarded course.

If you are reading this it is a good sign that you are interested and I definitely encourage you submit your application. It is an amazing opportunity to study, work and make relevant industry contacts. Filling out an application and attending an interview is not too hard for this opportunity!

After posting your application you will receive a letter indicating whether or not you have made it to the interview stage. I was excited and nervous about my interview. You will be interviewed by one academic from UTS and one industry sponsor. The interview is not too formal but you should dress appropriately in a suit or smart clothing.

The best advice I can give you is to be honest and to be youself. If you fill out the application and speak in the interview with your own ideas you will be more confident and this is a key characteristic the interviewers are looking for.

I wish you the best of luck with your application and interview, and hope to meet you at UTS next year!

Christopher Webster - 3rd Year BIT Student

The whole interview process was fairly easy and relaxed. A group of us sat and chatted in a room with a couple of the 1st and 2nd year BITs, waiting to be called for our interview. The atmosphere was pretty casual, despite most of us being dressed up in suits and feeling a little nervous. Talking with the students was really good, allowing us to get their perspective on the course and tell us what they really thought of it, without a lecturer being in the room. I was trying to decide between UNSW and UTS and it was a conversation with one of the students that probably led me to decide to go to UTS.

When I was called to do my interview, I was led to a lecturer's office and interviewed by her and a former BIT student, now working with Westpac - one of the sponsors of the course. The lecturer took the lead in the interview, asking me questions leading on from things that I'd written in my application. I found it to be pretty relaxed - I wasn't asked any tricky questions. I could answer anything they asked pretty well because I knew what I'd written in my application. One thing to keep in mind when writing your application is to put as wide a variety of your experiences in there as possible, otherwise the uni won't know about all the things that you've done.
