History

Information Technology at UTS has been developing since 1966 when UTS was still the NSW Institute of Technology.

IT began as a single computer science elective but quickly developed to the Division of Information Science and in 1970 became the Department of Information Science. Through the 1970's the Faculty of Mathematical and Computing Sciences and the School of Computing Sciences emerged.

In 2002 the Faculty of Information Technology was established, with three departments: Computer Systems, Information Systems and Software Engineering.

In 1994 we had two undergraduate degrees and four postgraduate qualifications. In 2004 we offered eight undergraduate degrees, including single and combined degrees and an Honours program, fifteen postgraduate degrees, two research degrees and numerous professionally recognised short courses. Our student population grew from 700 to over 2,300, including over 600 international students and many students in other faculties can now undertake our subjects.

2008 will herald a new era of IT teaching and research at UTS, with the merging of Engineering and IT.

UTS:IT has had many achievements over the decades. We have produced two VC's, Mary O'Kane and Gerard Sutton and our graduates have won four Academy Awards for computer animation. The uniqueness of our courses has been recognised by the industry and our skilled graduates remain in high demand among employers in all fields of IT and around the world.
